CLIMATE CHANGE ACROSS THE GLOBE; NIGERIA'S ROLE IN AVERTING THE IMMINENT DANGER

The conference on climate change going on in Paris and how countries of the word can help in reducing and curtailing the devasting effect of the change so as to protect humans and animals from the harm of such change is a call to responsibilty by responsible countries to help planet earth from the eminent danger posed by the climatic change. Change is a sign of progress constant in every human endeavour. There are positive change, also, there are negative ones; negative change that will cause irreperable harm on all the human family should be looked at through the same lens. A negative one as in the instant case occassioned inadvertaently by human endeavor, human industry so as to make the world a better and saver place to live in shuld be tackled collectively regardless of differences. The consequences of making the world a better place has occasioned blow on humans and animals alike and has continue to threaten the survival of same on planet earth due to the toxic waste of the mechanical machines and devices. In a view to look into the short and long term solution to the menace of these consequences, the Paris conference as a platform for veritable discussion becomes V-cube important on how best we can tackle the problem. No country can be said to be free of guilt of the cause(s) of the climatic change. The chief cause of this threat, carbon dioxide, popularly refered to as greenhouse gases is being emitted by all the countries of the world and the effect of its non reduction or curtailment as been adequately eplained by experts in the field. WWWF. maintained that carbonn dioxiode exist naturally, that action of humans by burning fossil fuels for energy (coal, oil, and natural gas) and by clearing forests has added to the already existing carbon dioxiode which trap heat in the atmosphere thereby regulating our climate. The excessive release of this greenhouse gases act as a blankett and that the thicker the blancket the warmer our planet becomes. Also, the Earth’s oceans are also absorbing some of this extra carbon dioxide, making them more acidic and less hospitable for sea life. It has also been recorded through research that Burning fossil fuels, such as coal, oil and natural gas, to generate energy has the greatest impact on the atmosphere than any other single human activity. Globally, power generation is responsible for about 23 billion tonnes of CO2 emissions per year – in excess of 700 tonnes every second. Coal is especially damaging to our atmosphere, releasing 70% more carbon dioxide than natural gas for every unit of energy produced. The effects of this climatic change have also been well documented which are frequent and intense drought, storms, heat waves, rising sea levels, melting glaciers and warming oceans which can directly harm animals, destroy the places they live, and wreak havoc on people’s livelihoods and communities. NIGERIA APPROACH TOWARDS TACKLING THE MENACE OF CLIMATIC CHANGE Ngeria as a developing country with over 170 million inhabitants, with its over-reliance on oil and lack of constanst electricity which necessitated the use of Generators to power electricity has contributed not in small quantity to the emision of carbon dioxide which is the chief cause of climatic change. In the ongoing discuss of climatic change in Paris, Nigerian president has signified his intention to tackle climatic change by planning to reduce 20% greenhouse emission unconditionally and 45% greenhouse emittion conditionally. Proir to the Paris Conference on climate change, President Buhari banned the importation of a small sized generator popularly referd to as "i pass my neighbour". Though the ban of the generator provoked a lot of public discuss, condemnation and critism from the masses because it impacts negatively on their livelihood but it represent a mission statement towards the pledge of President Buhari to the comity of states of finding a lasting solution from the causes of climate change causing irreparable damage to our ecosystem and survival together. To assist humanity, the people of Nigeria and the world, the governmenbt should through the mass media step up their campaign against actions that will impact negatively on the environment; the government herslf should embark on a re- orientation course, intimating her citizen through Federal minstry of environment and other similar agencies of the state on actions that impacts negatively on the environment. The federal Government and the state Government should be prepare to ensure the enforcement of various laws(Federal Environmental Protection Agency Act of 1988 FEPAAct,)(Environmental Impact Assessment Act of 1992 EIA Act),(Armful Wastes (Special Criminal Provisions Act of 1988 (Harmful Wastes Act),and Rules,(National Environmental Protection (Pollution Abatement in Industries and Facilities Generating Wastes) Regulations; and(National Environmental Protection (Management of Solid and Hazardous Wastes) Regulations,(Environmental Guidelines and Standards for the Petroleum Industry in Nigeria, EGASPIN) regulating the use to which environment is to be subjected to and be prepare to prosecute violaters of the law with the full attendant punishment. The government should earnestly discourage deforestation as it has been established that Forests help protect the planet by absorbing massive amounts of carbon dioxide (CO2), the most abundant type of pollution that causes climate change and that deforestation release huge amounts of carbon dioxide and other harmful greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. It also diminishes those regions’ ability to absorb carbon pollution. In fact, scientist have estimated up to 13 percent of global carbon emissions come from deforestation – greater than emissions from every car, truck and plane on the planet combined, and to encourage as a matter of necessity to planting of trees and flowers in the environment so as to absolve and reduce the risk of any ailment cause as a result of the excessive emission of carbon dioxiode. The responsiblity of finding a solution to the hazardous effect of climate change is not limited to the government alone, it extends also to the citizen. The citizens also needs to be law abiding and see to it that they desist from any activities that the law frown at in relation to the environment. The duty of enforcement of law which comprises of dection and prosecution should not be seen as the exclusive duty of the agencies in charge of it but should be seen as a collective effort. The police force and other agencies saddled with the responsibilities of crime detection and enforcement of the law sholud be assisted by the civilian population through prompt report of anybody about to or has done anything against the law that protect the environment. The world is a unit consisting of different element. Any threat to the existence and survival of man in any country is a threat in equal measure to another in another country not minding if the victims in the country have contributed through neglgence or any other way to the fate they are exposed to. the responsibilty of facing any threat that can adversely affect human family should be tackled individually and collectively.
